Beyonce, money and Beethoven

According to his biography Beethoven was forced to study music by his father who wanted to turn the young boy into a prodigy in order to help increase the low income of the family.
In the beginning Beethoven didn't like studying the musical instruments but his father made him practice day and night which led to boy to tears.
But for our lucky the genius kept this career.
Some centuries later would a father encourage his son to be a musician?
Would a father buy a guitar, a bass or drums to his boy with the same aim Bethoven's had in mind?
It doesn't sound probable. He would rather boss the lad to become  a footballer and make him practice till tears.
The world don't value great culture anymore, on the contrary, money, propaganda is destroying real art.
In the music spectrum clones are doing what is expected from them and those who become rich in this field lack not only talent but creation. Their souls are bought - reference: Beyonce.
I think about Beethoven. He worked hard to keep his profession... and the irony of losing his hearing. Still it was in silence he wrote his most important master pieces.
As far as money is concerned he didn't care about it and what we cherish is the wealth of his imagination.

Stephen Fry: Casablanca

"Casablanca for God's sake! If you have not seen Casablanca you might as well just simply show up. to anything. You don't deserve to live. It is as simple as that."* (Click on the video that is set to the time he says that.)

*I'm whispering. I hadn't seen Casablanca. I don't know what happened but our paths didn't cross. One day I was at a shop and I found Casablanca in DVD. I bought it. Quite a relief! I deserve to live!

Lately: I'm watching movies. Yesterday I watched again "Peter's Friends",
It was great watching it again.
I'm not feeling like talking about the movies. I have a lot to watch today. This is a good review* I found from a British perspective. The image above was a print screen but it is the same of the article with tiny difference.
Have a great Sunday. Don't tell anybody you didn't watch Casablanca. Do what I did..

Friday the 13th

Attributing one number bad lucky always puzzled me.
Adding a day of the week increased my amazement. There are many theories but not a conclusive one. Search here.
Can you imagine how did I feel when I was told that in USA there are buildings that don't have the 13th floor?
What kind of world's vision, what level of superstition have the people of a nation with this kind of leaders and history?
September, 11 or 9/11. Even tragic events respect the euphonic of numbers in America.
August, 6- 6/8? Nobody remembers. It's was in 1945.

Karni Mata Temple, India: Where rats reign

Each person has a reaction to this view that defy everything we know about rats and the pejorative connotation the word have among western culture.

The legend:

Legend has it that Laxman, Karni Mata's stepson (or the son of one of her storytellers), drowned in a pond in Kapil Sarovar in Kolayat Tehsil while he was attempting to drink from it. Karni Mata implored Yama, the god of death, to revive him. First refusing, Yama eventually relented, permitting Laxman and all of Karni mata's male children to be reincarnated as rats.
The story behind rats at the temple is different according to some local folklore. According to this version, a 20,000 strong army deserted a nearby battle and came running to Deshnoke. Upon learning of the sin of desertion, punishable by death, Karni Mata spared their lives but turned them into rats, and offered the temple as a future place to stay. The army of soldiers expressed their gratitude and promised to serve Karni Mata evermore.

Eating food that has been nibbled on by the rats is considered to be a "high honor". If one of them is killed, it must be replaced with one made of solid silver."

Nobody ever got a disease in these temples in India.

Thin is out, skinny is in: Is there space for curves in the fashion world?

Reigniting the discussion is worthless.
I just don't understand why do these people that work in the fashion world are that powerful that impose one and only one possibility of
beauty: being skin and bones.
Finding clothes above a certain size is impossible.

We were obsessed with being thin but now it is not enough. Models  have died because of anorexia - a imposed disease that has nothing to do with the real one - women suffers dismenorreia and numerous problems. Many have cocaine so that they can have "energy" to work.
According to some specialists our brain is made of 2/3 of fat.
It is already part of collective conscience that thin is the only possible way and even architecture and designs are projected for thin people.

People are eager to starve to be skinny or are  encouraged to follow a diet that miraculously will make them lose a huge amount of weight in two, three, five days...

We all know these arguments. I've been waiting for a change since... ever. When will models and top models will show a beautiful and healthy body?

It affects teenagers and most people feel bad about their bodies even when they are thin.

And I'm sorry! Skinny is ugly. Men and women. But this is me.

Fake brand handbags shows women's character: Integrity in science?

"One of the more fascinating revelations is that women who carry fake Louis Vuitton or Tory Burch handbags or wear fake Cartier jewelry, are more likely to lie, cheat or steal than other women."

This is a research done by Dr. Dan Ariely, a Professor of Behavioral Economics at Duke University, has discovered and FOX news published an article about this revelation.

This will go for the 100% fake Hella Heaven seal.
This absurd hypotheses  is another of many absurdities from academic "researchers" of many specialties.
Dr. Dan Ariely should not be praised for such nonsense. He should be put on trial by his peers but chances are that his peers will soon be peer-reviewing it to accept it as theory.
Integrity in science? Where?
It seems that only those who are not receiving money from any institution or even who are far from institutions are capable of real research.

The consequences of researches like this are very serious. Still, nothing is done.

Update:
Just got this comment from Mark:

Blogger Mark p.s.2 said...
Do they also have more fake orgasm's during sex?
September 7, 2012 12:09 PM

Lol...
I'm sure they will never approach this topic because they would have to deal with the fact that their women
fake.
You know those couple that have a tacit pact? She fakes he pretends he doesn't know and she pretends that she doesn't know he knows.
Till death apart...
Taboo topic. I love them. I'll do a post about faking orgasm. Just wait.

"Sing a Song of Sixpence": nursery rhymes for your children

Sing a song of sixpence,
A pocket full of rye.
Four and twenty blackbirds,
Baked in a pie.

When the pie was opened,
The birds began to sing;
Wasn't that a dainty dish,
To set before the king?

The king was in his counting house,
Counting out his money;
The queen was in the parlour,
Eating bread and honey.

The maid was in the garden,
Hanging out the clothes;
When down came a blackbird
And pecked off her nose.

I hope you have fun with your children.

Bums and vagrants are not homeless

Do not search meanings in dictionaries and don't try to help them because they don't want us telling them what to do.
According to your views you can give them money but useless to talk to them if they don't want.

They don't want charity, they don't want a home.
They just want to be left alone.

21th Century Most Dangerous People: those who dare to mix

Mixing: The crime of the century.
"In 1845, Ralph Waldo Emerson, alluding to the development of European civilization out of the medieval Dark Ages, wrote in his private journal of America as the Utopian product of a culturally and racially mixed "smelting pot", but only in 1912 were his remarks first published. In his writing, Emerson explicitly welcomed the racial intermixing of whites and non-whites, a highly controversial view during his lifetime."
"In The Melting Pot (1905), Zangwill combined a romantic denouement with a utopian celebration of complete cultural intermixing. The play was an adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, set in New York City.
2012: Xenophobia and hate in the utmost degree. What a setback! We are going backwards.

Guest post: Jason Weiss's Hat and Beard

Hat and Beard
by Jason Weiss

"I’m a guest here.  If I wore a hat, I would hang it over there on that hook.  At home, I prefer to take off my shoes, and when it’s hot, like today, I would rather wear shorts, so if you don’t mind.  Good, much better.  Ice?  Yes, please.

But some day you do something differently, and then it becomes a habit, so people see you differently, even just a little.  Like you start wearing a certain hat.  Or you grow a beard.  Excuse me.  I grow a beard.

Last October I started to grow a beard, and haven’t cut it since.  Can things really be that simple?

The beard has been an amusement, for a season or two.  And then, like all things external, it will go.

You look Byzantine, declared one friend who happens to be of Greek heritage.  Others said a rabbi, or a learned man, and one guy at the gym kept asking what new role had I been asked to play.  My daughter was horrified, visiting from college, but my son cheers me on and it’s always been for him somewhat; his own beard is still a year or four away.  My wife has never approved of facial hair, for me at least .  Early on, she was ashen with anguish and said she couldn’t look at me, poor thing.

It feels funny when I’m swimming laps.  I’m not sure I like the feeling.

Doubtful that I’d last too long with a hat either.  I’d forget it the first place I went, or decide it made my head itchy.  Would you mind, now that I’m here, if I finish that rabbit stew you left in the refrigerator?"

Sure, enjoy the stew Jason but would you mind if I smoke?

I just received this text and I still have that smile on my face when I finish reading something witty... not the exact word... never mind.
Jason Weiss was one of the gifts and one of the reason that makes me keep blogging.  One year ago I posted the excerpt of an interview he did with Julio Cortázar.
Last month he sent me an e-mail and we started exchanging some ideas. He is interested in literature, music and art and knows a lot of Brazilian musicians and some writers.
He has been working as a translator, writer did some reviews and is also an editor. and he has friends that are musicians, painters, writers in short, his universe is artistic.
Visit his site Itineraries of a Hummingbird and look at the authors he interviewed when he was in Paris:

E. M. Cioran, Julio Cortázar, Brion Gysin, Eugène Ionesco, Carlos Fuentes, Jean-Claude Carrière, Milan Kundera, Nathalie Sarraute, Edmond Jabès from the book "Writing at Risk".
Not enough?

Wait till next month for the book

"Always in Trouble":

Interviews with Bernard Stollman plus 40 others, including John Tchicai, Gunter Hampel, Gato Barbieri, Milford Graves, Roswell Rudd, Sirone, Sonny Simmons, Tom Rapp, Richard Alderson, Sunny Murray, Marion Brown, Alan Silva, Peter Stampfel, Steve Weber, Burton Greene, and Jacques Coursil.

There is more at his site and I was very touched that he did a review of a book of chronicles of the Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector, an Ukrainian that came to Brazil as an infant because of the first war.

Thank you Jason.

John Lennon analyzing our society

"War is a game that has gone too far."

If you listen you'll see that what he said portrays the world as it is today.
By that time musicians, artists, writers, and all of those who were in the culture arena were part of the anti-establishment movement, anti-war movement or counterculture or any movement for fight for freedom and a better world.

It was not about leadership. It has to do with saying what many who don't have a microphone was thinking and uniting people who wanted to change the world.
In the era of celebrities it was lost.

"I think that our society is run by insane people for insane objectives..."

"If anybody can put on paper what our government, the American government etc., and Russian and China, what they are actually trying to do, what do they think they're doing I would be very pleased to
know what they think they're doing!"

"All we have to do is awaken the power in the people. The people are unaware, they are not
educated to realize that they have power."

"Everybody believes that the father will fix everything, the father being the government... the government will fix everything, it is all government's fault and shake this - Lennon show his fist - but we are the government.
The people are the government."

"Peace and war are two products."

The fight for freedom is never over.

Dirty Fucking Hippies were Right! transcription and song

This video appeared and nobody knows who did the rant, the edition, the melody... nothing. Still it tells some truth. Worthy listening since...
"Peace is never discussed. Peace has somehow become a pejorative..." The Big Pharma and their fake concern wit health selling medicines that kill...
Update:
I just found the transcription at Daily Kos:
But something puzzles me. How can a revolution forgets to manifest culturally? Is it possible to revolutionize talking about economy, politics and ranting but without creating not even a tiny symbol that communicates what is the desire of people?
This song(?) is the result of the lack of a anti-establishment culture in US and in the whole world.
A song that raises the issues enumerating them but incapable of reaching hearts and minds and with no cultural print.
Appealing to the hippies was the way out but I doubt that people is willing not to wash their hair or behave the old hippie way and it is sad that this soapbox song refers to them the way they are called by those who hate their message.
Again it seems that creativity is way out of reach and without it, without art, literature, music, and all the "humanities" a crucial part of human beings vanishes.
When the imagination is not exercised, exited, and capable of creating, analyzing, and criticizing it is easier to control the thoughts and desires of the population, not people because they don't see people, they see numbers.
Fighting for education that is not financed and dictate by the corporations is also part of this revolution.
The alleged counter-establishment group "Anonymous" took a mask from a movie.
Have you noticed that in this movie, "V de Vendetta", there are books, paintings, sculptures, a whole iconography of the weapons that revolutionaries use to express their ideas?
"Bullets don't kill an ideal."
Take a good look at the black and white photography above and tell us what you see.

The Dirty Fucking Hippies were Right!
"Flag planting on Iwo Jima. Tug-of-war with dollar sign. Headline: U.S. economy worsens. Chart heading sharply down “Class Is Now in Recession”.
“There’s a black granite wall in Washington DC that bears 58,260 names on it. All of those whose names that are carved on that wall are dead. For what? Freedom?.
“If this country had listened when kids were screaming to stop that slaughter, that wall would have been one hell of a lot shorter.
“Yet we as a nation still wage wars of choice. Wars encouraged by plutocrats who never have to fight them.
“Peace is never discussed. Peace has somehow become a perjorative.
“Peace is no perjorative. Peace is essential to the survival of the human race. And those who advocate for war are a dangerous and fearful group who should be marginalized and disavowed.
“War is always the last choice. The dirty fucking hippies … were right.
“Now the oceans have been rising. The polar ice is melting at alarming rates. The climate is changing in irreversible ways. Our survival as a species on this planet is on a precipice.
“The science on this is clear. Humans are now in trouble. Because of our reckless stewardship of what we dominated, we have polluted this fragile jewel that hangs in space – our only home.
“We’ve elected sociopath after sociopath for the last 30 years, to every level of government. – many of them slaves to corporate parasites that gorge themselves at the public trough, while the most vulnerable people in our society – the sick, the young, and the elderly – go wanting.
“The food we buy is contaminated. The toys we give our children as presents for Christmas are tainted with poisons. The water we drink is rife with carcinogens. The fish in our seas, lakes and rivers are so full of mercury that it’s only recommended that we eat them once per week.
“We have now come face to face with our own extinction.
“I hate to say ‘I told you so,’ but the dirty fucking hippies … were right.
“Billions of dollars of profits are being snitched up at the expense and suffering of our neighbors by the jackals that comprise our pharmaceutical companies and insurance companies. Both of which pipe their diagnostic wisdom and their fake concern right into our homes via TV and radio commercials.
“These legal drug dealers now sell their wares with impunity. And the insurance gamblers perform a slick game of three-card monte right in our living rooms.
“Most of these drugs have a list of caveats that would make even the most dishonest used car salesman blush. And the insurance hustlers change the rules of the game just when it’s time to pay up – profiting from the suffering and pain and others, profiting from human frailty.
“Universal healthcare? ‘It’s too expensive,’ we’re told. Gasbags talking heads on TV and radio have been complicit in this deception, while being handsomely compensated for their assistance.
“I’ll say it again: the dirty fucking hippies … were right.
“Big box discount stores descend upon small towns in America like alien ships, filled with cheap products bought at low prices from countries that pay their workers slave wages. Plutocrats love this business model!
“Mom and Pop shops can’t compete with prices set by these huge corporate parasites and, to no one’s surprise, many small businesses in these tiny hamlets fail, leaving small towns filled with empty storefronts and even, in some cases, forcing these same small business operators to go to work for the very people that ruined their livelihoods.
“Small-town America is subsequently decimated by this invasion. Often helpless in stopping it.
“Wall Street has cannibalized itself. Still hungry, feeling the pangs of their greed, they’ve now come to the government for their daily meal. And still, without a hint of irony, a spokesman for this ravenous tribe mounts his soapbox and has the temerity to rail against the ‘evils of Socialism’.
“Turns out the Socialism is for them. The Capitalism is for us.
“Abbie Hoffman once baited these banksters by throwing cash onto the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. To no one’s astonishment, they demonstrated their insatiable greed. The gluttons couldn’t help themselves – they stopped trading, got on their knees, and swept up the free loot.
“Wall Street should have been reined in long ago.
“I’ll say it again: The dirty fucking hippies … were right!”

United States Congress has members serving for more than 40 years

This list is at Wikipedia. It is curious that a democratic nation has a congress which some members have more than 40 years of service. John Dingell 55 years! It is more than Qaddafi's 43 years dictatorship, not comparing the work of the both, for sure.

Troy Davis x Rubin Carter: what Troy Davis don't have

Troy Davis don't have Bob Dylan to write a protest song telling his story.

I was a teenager living under dictatorship, because US wanted it in order to prevent communist regimes and other reasons, and this music was playing on the radios and though I could not understand all the lyrics, I emphasized the few lines and words I could understand in the seventies, and had nobody to ask what was it about I knew exactly what he was denouncing.

I got so angry when I heard it and justice was all I wanted as many of those who didn't know the whole story. At that time politics was part of culture and a man could not dare to say he didn't have political views. Men read newspapers in the morning, it was part of the ritual and he had to talk to his friends about political topics. I remember watching at the TV, that beautiful woman - just searched and it is Scarlet Rivera - with a long hair playing the violin, Bob Dylan guitar and singing. That's what many Americans did at that time and it set Rubin Hurricane Carter free. It was when I watched the movie Denzel Washington impersonates Rubin Carter that I became aware of the whole story. Again I'm angry because there are many stories like this one in US but America has gone back in time, or turned mad, or... whatever happened that even it's president after breaking many conventions and laws appears at the television claiming: "Justice was done." after the death of Osama bin Laden. If the president of United States of America gives this example, Obama ordering to shoot Osama is a crime according to international law, and this is one of many international laws US is breaking in the name of "protecting Americans", "humanitarian aid" and other "noble causes", what is striking is the way American is treating it's own citizens, black or white. Blacks, as always, at the death-row... same old story even when the case has international attention like Troy Davis that will be executed today, or the case of Mumia Abu Jamal to name two, US government remains silent, people remain silent. If you followed till here, thank you, this is the song that made a great part of the world be aware of the injustice Rubin Hurricane Carter was suffering and helped him have a trial.

Troy Davis? He is about to be executed 7:00 p.m. Greenwich Meantime.

This case has received world attention and Troy Davis didn't have a fair trial and is about to have a lethal injection. Names like Joan Baez, Salman Rushdie and others have twitted but who knows about it? What is happening to our culture that makes it impossible to people be responsible for what is happening and fight for justice of others or even manifest discontentment with a status quo that affects directly citizens daily life?

What is happening to Troy Davis went too far. Being on the verge of receiving the lethal injection after all of what was done? What is happening that made our voices blow in the wind without any result? America is playing with us, playing a ridiculous game and it is a shame. If Obama could see himself at today's speech trying to prevent Palestine to be part of UN the way many people do he would never show his face again. Obama, Sarkozy and others are clowns and all the elite that is ruling the world have power and are inflicting heinous pain to many. Ironically they are clowns who lost track of how ridiculous they look, how old their strategies are and how far from freedom they have always been. They are condemned from birth.

Update: Troy Davis will not be killed today and this case is being used I still don't know why. Update: September, 22, 2011 he was executed by lethal injection - (post above)

Hurricane

Pistol shots ring out in the barroom night

Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall.
She sees the bartender in a pool of blood,
Cries out, "My God, they've killed them all!"
Here comes the story of the Hurricane,
The man the authorities came to blame
For somethin' that he never done.
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
The champion of the world.

Three bodies lyin' there does Patty see
And another man named Bello, movin' around mysteriously.
"I didn't do it," he says, and he throws up his hands
"I was only robbin' the register, I hope you understand.
I saw them leavin'," he says, and he stops
"One of us had better call up the cops."
And so Patty calls the cops
And they arrive on the scene with their red lights flashin'
In the hot New Jersey night.

Meanwhile, far away in another part of town
Rubin Carter and a couple of friends are drivin' around.
Number one contender for the middleweight crown
Had no idea what kinda shit was about to go down
When a cop pulled him over to the side of the road
Just like the time before and the time before that.
In Paterson that's just the way things go.
If you're black you might as well not show up on the street
'Less you wanna draw the heat.

Alfred Bello had a partner and he had a rap for the cops.
Him and Arthur Dexter Bradley were just out prowlin' around
He said, "I saw two men runnin' out, they looked like middleweights
They jumped into a white car with out-of-state plates."
And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head.
Cop said, "Wait a minute, boys, this one's not dead"
So they took him to the infirmary
And though this man could hardly see
They told him that he could identify the guilty men.

Four in the mornin' and they haul Rubin in,
Take him to the hospital and they bring him upstairs.
The wounded man looks up through his one dyin' eye
Says, "Wha'd you bring him in here for? He ain't the guy!"
Yes, here's the story of the Hurricane,
The man the authorities came to blame
For somethin' that he never done.
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
The champion of the world.

Four months later, the ghettos are in flame,
Rubin's in South America, fightin' for his name
While Arthur Dexter Bradley's still in the robbery game
And the cops are puttin' the screws to him, lookin' for somebody to blame.
"Remember that murder that happened in a bar?"
"Remember you said you saw the getaway car?"
"You think you'd like to play ball with the law?"
"Think it might-a been that fighter that you saw runnin' that night?"
"Don't forget that you are white."

Arthur Dexter Bradley said, "I'm really not sure."
Cops said, "A poor boy like you could use a break
We got you for the motel job and we're talkin' to your friend Bello
Now you don't wanta have to go back to jail, be a nice fellow.
You'll be doin' society a favor.
That sonofabitch is brave and gettin' braver.
We want to put his ass in stir
We want to pin this triple murder on him
He ain't no Gentleman Jim."

Rubin could take a man out with just one punch
But he never did like to talk about it all that much.
It's my work, he'd say, and I do it for pay
And when it's over I'd just as soon go on my way
Up to some paradise
Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice
And ride a horse along a trail.
But then they took him to the jail house
Where they try to turn a man into a mouse.

All of Rubin's cards were marked in advance
The trial was a pig-circus, he never had a chance.
The judge made Rubin's witnesses drunkards from the slums
To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum
And to the black folks he was just a crazy nigger.
No one doubted that he pulled the trigger.
And though they could not produce the gun,
The D.A. said he was the one who did the deed
And the all-white jury agreed.

Rubin Carter was falsely tried.
The crime was murder "one," guess who testified?
Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied
And the newspapers, they all went along for the ride.
How can the life of such a man
Be in the palm of some fool's hand?
To see him obviously framed
Couldn't help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land
Where justice is a game.

Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties
Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise
While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell
An innocent man in a living hell.
That's the story of the Hurricane,
But it won't be over till they clear his name
And give him back the time he's done.
Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been
The champion of the world.
